Poverty will affect nearly half of all elderly

Nearly half of all Americans between the ages of 60 and 90 will encounter at least one year of poverty or near poverty, says a recent study by Mark R. Rank, PhD, professor at the Brown School. The findings are published in the current issue of Families in Society: The Journal of Contemporary Social Services. FULL STORY

Life on Safari premieres at Steinberg

HEC-TV’s new documentary film Dana Brown’s Life on Safari will premiere at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Steinberg Auditorium in Steinberg Hall. The documentary chronicles the adventures of Safari Coffee founder Dana Brown. A question-and-answer “Meet the Producer” session and a reception will follow the screening. FULL STORY

Obituary: Friedman, 90

Harvey A. Friedman, a supporter of research on aging at WUSTL, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010. He was 90. Donations from Friedman and wife Dorismae Hacker Friedman enabled the creation in 2000 of the Center for Aging at Washington University. FULL STORY

  • Campus2Home shuttle expanded hours. The Campus2Home shuttles are now operating under expanded hours, 6 p.m.-4 a.m., seven days a week. Previously, the shuttle operated from 7 p.m.-2:30 a.m. The shuttle provides a safe ride home from the Danforth Campus for those living in four designated areas off campus: Skinker-DeBaliviere, Loop South, north of The Loop and just south of the Danforth Campus.

  • Men’s basketball undefeated in Lopata Classic. Senior Spencer Gay scored 19 points and earned tournament MVP honors as the men’s basketball team defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges 66-57 Dec. 4 at the WU Field House. The Bears also picked up an 80-70 victory Dec. 3 in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 during an exhibition contest with Tsinghua University from the People’s Republic of China.
